My Dog's New Year's Resolutions

1. I will stop eating my best friend's (my owner's) blankets.
   
2. I will try harder to be still when my owner trims my nails.
3. I will stop playing tug-of-war with my Dad's underwear while he is on the toilet.
4. I will also stop putting my nose in his crouch while he is on the toilet.
5. I will stop eating socks and then redepositing them in the backyard.
6. I will not eat my sister's poop in the backyard.
7. I will also refrain from licking my owners in the face after eating poop.
8. I will be nicer about sharing my toys and bones with my sisters.
9. I will stop rolling my toys and bones under the furniture.
10. I will stop eating the cats' food (before or after they eat it).
    
11. "Kitty box" crunchies are not treats.
12. I will not wake my Mommy up by sticking my cold, wet nose up her behind.
13. I will stop hogging the covers in the bed (my Mommy gets cold).

Toxiban: For Your Pet Emergency Kit

Toxiban. Have you heard of it?

Another product for pet owners to consider keeping in their Pet First Aid Emergency Kit is Toxiban Activated Charcoal. An alternative to inducing vomiting, using Hydrogen Peroxide, this substance is a fine powder form of processed charcoal. It binds to many types of poisons and can keep them from being absorbed into the bloodstream while facilitating their excretion via feces.

It is administered when an animal ingests organic poisons, chemicals, or other toxins. Those toxins include, but are not limited to, strychnine, insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, depressants and analgesics. Toxiban might be wise to have in any pet lovers Pet Emergency Kit because it is also effective in adsorbing other poisonous substances eaten or drunk by dogs or cats. The recommended dose of Toxiban Activated Charcoal for most animals is 1-3 grams/kg. As with any medication, always check with your veterinary specialist before administering.

Hydogen Peroxide - The Nausent for Dogs

3% Hydrogen Peroxide should be a must in every dog owner's medicine cabinet. Although most commonly thought of as a way to clean a wound, another important use is to induce vomiting when your dog has ingested toxins, foreign objects, drugs or spoiled food. However, check with your veterinarian first because there are times when it is best not to induce vomiting. Dogs won't drink peroxide willingly so buy an oral dose syringe or keep a turkey baster on hand to help administer the liquid. Also check the expiration date; expired peroxide is not as effective.

Human Medicines That are Safe for Pets

Let's start with this preliminary comment. Several medications are safe for both animals and humans but - PLEASE DO NOT GIVE YOUR PET ANY HUMAN MEDICATIONS WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR VETERINARIAN FIRST. The reason for this is really quite simple. The physiologies of dogs and cats are very different than that of humans, and what is safe for us may very well be deadly for them.

Here is a list of a few of the over-the-counter medications that you can give your pet in an emergency. Please remember to contact your veterinarian before medicating your pet, and do not give these medications long-term unless your veterinarian recommends it. Also REMEMBER - that just because some is good, more is not necessarily better, and that two similar medications used to treat the same problem in humans can have very different effects in an animal.
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®)
Dogs and cats can be given 1-2 mg/lb every eight hours. This can be used to treat allergic reactions, and it also has some anti-anxiety and anti-vertigo effects. As a general rule, it is pretty safe stuff. The primary side effect is drowsiness, so please do not allow your pet to drink alcohol or operate heavy machinery while taking it.
Buffered Aspirin (Bufferin®, Ascriptin ® )
Dogs can take 5-12.5 mg/lb every 12 hours for pain, inflammation and fever. I usually recommend one regular-strength tablet (325 mg) for a 50-60 lb. dog. It can be given to cats, but at a much lower and less frequent dosage interval, so it is best just to steer clear of aspirin in a cat unless prescribed by your vet. Side effects include stomach upset (note that ‘Buffered’ is underlined) and decreased blood clotting.
Kaolin/Pectin (Kaopectate®)
This product can be used to treat diarrhea. It used to be very safe in both dogs and cats, but the brand-name stuff has recently been reformulated to contain salicylates, which are potentially dangerous to cats. The dose for both is 0.5-1 mg/lb every 4-6 hours, but make sure that you use the original formula for cats. The main side effect is constipation.
Bismuth Subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol®)
This product can be used to treat nausea and diarrhea, but it shouldn’t be used in cats, because it contains salicylates. It is the anti-diarrheal of choice in ferrets. The dosage is 1 ml/8-10 lbs every 6-8 hours for dogs, and 0.5-1 ml/lb every 8 hours for ferrets. Side effects include discoloration of stools.
Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton®, Aller-Chlor®)
This is a good antihistamine to assist with managing sneezing and sinus allergies in dogs and cats. It comes in 4 mg tablets, and is dosed at ½-1 tablet per cat every 12 hours, and 1-2 tablets per dog (up to a maximum dose of 0.25 mg/lb) every 8-12 hours. It can also cause drowsiness.
Dextromethorphan/Guaifenesin (Robitussin DM ®)
This product can be used to treat coughing in dogs, cats and ferrets, at a dosage of 0.5 ml/lb every 8 hours. Make sure that it is the ‘DM’ product only, and remember that coughing can be a symptom of some very serious diseases. It can also cause some mild sedation.

A Tail Wagging Christmas

According to a poll by AP-Petside.com, dogs will be wagging their tails a lot at Christmas. A majority of all pet owners (53%) will be getting their pets a present this holiday season. Dogs look like they will fare better than cats. 56% of dog owners,as compared to 48% of cat owners, plan to give their babies Christmas presents this holiday season.

Treats seem to be the most popular gifts among pet owners. Others popular presents are toys, clothes, and beds. Rescues are always in need of supplies. If you are replacing your pet's bed, think of donating the old one to rescue.
