Top 10 Guard Dog Breeds

This post comes courtesy of 6 pack of dogs reader and fellow blogger, Allen Wright. Here is a link to his blog http://www.homealarmmonitoring.org/year/top-10-breeds-of-guard-dogs/

According to Allen's blog, Home Alarm Monitoring.org, the #1 way to protect your home and family is to have a home alarm system installed . The #2 way is to have a dog. With that in mind, following is a list of the top ten breeds when considering owning a dog for their guard dog capabilities.

The fact that most of these breeds are sweet, loving, loyal, and gentle as pets, makes them even more valuable. In other words, don't let their size or appearance make you shy away from them as companions for your family. As is always the case, do your research. Find the breed that fits you, your family, and your family's needs and you will have the most wonderful friend for life.

1. Rottweiler

2. German Shepherd
3. Doberman Pinscher
4. Bullmastiff

5. Rhodesian Ridgeback
6. American Bulldog

Potentially Toxic Inside Plants for Pet Birds

In an effort to continue to be fair to all pet owners and pet lovers, I felt it was necessary to help fellow bird owners. While in a vet's office recently, I was surprised to see a plant I knew was toxic to animals. When I pointed it out to the vet, he did not know of its potential dangers to his customers. Along those lines, here are some plants that could be harmful to your pet birds.

Keep your pet bird or birds away from these potentially toxic inside plants:

Some of these include:
- aloe (Aloe vera)

- avocados
- Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata)
- cyclamen species
- dieffenbachia species
- English ivy (Hedera helix)
- ficus species
- kalanchoe species
- madagascar dragon tree (Dracaena marginata)

- philodendron species
- schefflera species
- snake plant (Sansevieria trifiscata)

- tomato leaves and stems (green parts)
- rhubarb leaves

If your pet is showing signs of illness in the presence of a potentially toxic plant, consider the likelihood that your pet could be sick from inappropriate ingestion of the plant. With any such suspicions, contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center to determine the best treatment. As there are numerous plants that may harbor toxic effects, you can visit the APSCA APC for more information on and pictures of these potentially hazardous plants.
