Today, October the 4th, is World Animal Day. Started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence, Italy, World Animal Day celebrates all animal life. The date, October 4th, was chosen because it is the feast day of Francis of Assisi, a nature lover and patron saint of animals and the environment. Churches throughout the world observe October 4th with a Blessing of the Animals.
