Most dog breeds, if raised with children and given the appropriate training, have the potential to be children-friendly companions. However there are some breeds whose general characteristics make them naturally more adaptable to sharing their lives with small humans. While many large breeds may be sweet and affectionate they can unintentionally be dangerous around small children due to the dog's size and strength. That is why many pet owners prefer to adopt small dogs with calm, patient, non-aggressive temperaments.
