We Love Birds Too

We at 6 pack of dogs have not limited our love of animals to only canine critters. We love all animals. As a matter of fact, we are also the proud owners Sydney, a beautiful and sassy blue and gold macaw. As a result, we are always looking for things to help us with Sydney. THE DANGERS OF FRUIT SEEDS AND PITS

Q: Is it safe to let my parrot eat fruit seeds?

A: Whenever you question whether or not something is safe for your bird, it is always best to opt against using it until you know for certain. My philosophy is: when in doubt, don't. Fruit is wonderful for your parrot but the seeds cause a lot of confusion because some are bad and others are not. Here is a list you can use as a guideline.

UNSAFE SEEDS
The seeds of apples and the pits of cherries, peaches, plums, pears, apricots, and nectarines are all unsafe to give your birds. They contain varying levels of a cyanide compound that can cause death. In humans, it would take many, many apple seeds to cause us to feel the effects of the poison, but, of course, parrots would succumb much more quickly to a smaller amount. If your bird does gets a hold of a couple of apple seeds, it is not a big deal and you do not need to rush him to the vet.
Keep in mind that the larger the seed or pit, the higher the amount of toxins they contain. Chewing them releases amounts of poison that might otherwise remain locked inside the hull and pass through the system without causing much harm. Unfortunately, birds chew everything, and if given the opportunity to chew open a pit, they will.

SAFE SEEDS
The seeds contained in grapes, cantaloupe, cranberries, watermelon, and pomegranates are all safe for birds to eat. Also safe are the seeds of citrus fruits, such as, oranges, grapefruits and lemons. While they are not fruits, the seeds from squashes and pumpkins are good for parrots too. Sometimes giving these seedy portions of fruits and vegetables will entice a bird to eat the flesh around them.

The pomegranate is a most interesting fruit. The only thing edible about it is the seed portion. the seeds are surrounded by a foam-like textured fruit covered in a tough rind. This is a great foraging toy for a bird. Serve it like the picture to the left.

"SCOUT"ing out Critters on the Move

We would like to introduce you to Scout. Scout's owners, Paul and Paula, from Northern Virginia, saw us at the Carolina Beach Farmer's Market. They came into our booth and had us photograph their baby. This is the wonderful decal that was the result of that photo shoot. Now Scout is with Paula everywhere she goes.

Not only is Scout beautiful, he is also as sweet as can be and smart. He and mom (Paula) treated us to a performance of his repertoire of tricks. We were able to video Scout's show. Hopefully, we will be able to share it with everyone.

Summer Vacation - Don't forget about your Dogs and Pets

Summer is here and everyone tries to go on vacation or, at least, tries to get in a long weekend. Many of us have are foregoing the old ritual of taking the "babies" to the kennel. Many people are hiring professional Pet Sitters. Others are relying on the good old-fashioned method, asking friends.

Some friends are kind enough to come to your house to pet sit. While others will keep them at their own homes. Hopefully, if they are bringing your pets into their home, they know your pets well and vice versa. There is one very important thing to remember about pet sitters. If you are happy about the person or service you chose, but your dog is growling or really upset with the person, you might want to consider another option or person.

Regardless of which you choose, all pet lovers worry about their pets while they are away. Are they being fed correctly? Are they getting out everyday to potty? Do they have enough water? Whichever method you choose, we at DogPerils, Critters on the Move, and Touch of a Paw thought we would help you with preparing for this event.


Tips for pet owners

• Keep pet sitting instructions simple (1-2 pages is better than 14)
• Type up the instructions (do not hand-write). Put all important info (i.e., emergency contact information) in large bold letters at the bottom
• List all medications/allergies the pet might have (with only necessary instructions)
• Make a “care and feeding” section for each pet (unless instructions are the same)
• Include your phone number/location
• Include name/contact info for the animal’s vet
• Include local contact info: A neighbor, a family member, etc.
• Optional: Include location for extra set of house keys

Meet Fred

Another Carolina Beach resident, Peter Liquist, brought Fred, his awesome bulldog, by our tent at the Farmers Market two weeks ago. Gloria got some great pictures and Fred was very friendly and expressive. Be on the look out for Fred's decal driving through town.
